You have to hand it to gamers; they build strong communities as they play the same e-sports, and they build websites JAM-packed with high-tech features and doodads and entertainment items that serve those communities.
This gem is built by an individual, and it's pretty uncomplicated for a gaming website. The site pays for itself by the use of a few simple tools.
The Content Management System used here is an early one that was ahead of its time, but is no longer supported (gamers again, are ahead of the curve for their tech know-how.) But the system supports skins/templates to change appearance. And then content and plug-ins were added as needed.
Even though no longer supported, the CMS used here still is flexible enough to allow for the (now) future, and RSS feeds are mixed with social bookmarking links, embedded video, and a customizable MP3 player.
Since this site serves a community with a particular interest in a particular online game, links to anything they might need related to that interest make the site very sticky for its community. Galleries, forums, journals and blogs, two calendars to view and schedule game events, their game server status and their communications status are instantly accessible by their members. They can also see who else is logged in the site at the same time, and text-chat with them real time. (while they wait to play? or while they're at work or in the school library?)
This site delivers to a tight community of online gamers, income is brought in through a small (off-site) affiliate store as well as specific gaming ads.
This site is actually for a gaming guild. But this site style could be applied to any community, club, organization, or group in which the members are highly active and are separated only by distance.
The easiest place to start with advertisements (in which affiliates get paid every time someone clicks on your ads) is with G00gle's program. Its seamless, quick, easy, and as an affiliate, you can grow your affiliate account as your web presence grows.
